The Ford Theatre Reunion – Lexington, Kentucky has never produced such an original band in it’s entire history.  Self proclaimed Sludgefunkcircuspunk may not do this Vaudevillian Mad Scientist Prog band full justice.  They are the definition of a “Must See Live” band.  Local Prog Rock maniacs, The Maw, were so smitten with TFTR that they got married in a joint show last year.  Mix Clarinet, Accordion, Banjo, Keyboard, Bass, Guitar, and Drums and you will find yourself neck deep in the Joyful Mustache Twisting music of this brilliant band!  A musical journey that is worth taking over and over again.

Dreadnaught (Colorado Springs, CO.) finds a home in surreal atmospheres, complex, yet approachable grooves, and an immense palette of textures and moods. Collaboration and the highest quality of friendship have fashioned this quartet’s knack for contemplative songraft while also inspiring each member to bring their multi-instrumental talents to the foray, introducing mandolin, saxophone, and flute into their repertoire. Dual female vocals embellish the group’s signature sound as a finishing touch. It’s no wonder that this foundation allows for references to classic prog rock and funk, post rock, black metal, and Latin jazz without sacrificing a sonic imprint filled with spaciousness and ether.

Appropriately Dreadnought’s lyrics capture this atmosphere with themes of the infinite and unknowable, reaching for the stars and into the depths of existence. Bridging Realms finds the band’s potential truly realized, taking its sounds into strange, undiscovered, and delightful territory.

The Maw – “The Maw are an incredible live band, and I have to admit, I am proud to know that they are from the Des Moines area. I hate the label of “Jam Band”… I think it sends out visions of sandal-wearing hippies singing funky melodies in between structured guitar and drum solos… Not that there is anything wrong with that… It’s just that I have been there, and that scene has worn thin with me. The Maw certainly do not apply to that form of music… But I think a Band that Jams might be a good fit. Half way through “Chora” the first song in their set, I am thinking to myself, Dem boys be smoking some funky stuff.

They actually caught me off guard… I wasn’t expecting to be that entertained.

Who do they sound like? Well if you ask the band, they will tell you Miles Davis, Cannibal Corpse, Pink Floyd, and The Mahavishnu Orchestra, to name a few. That’s quite a mix, and if you throw in what I heard, you’d have to add pockets of Supertramp, Jethro Tull, King Krimson, and Sundial. I couldn’t help but wonder how a band could be influenced by so many, and yet defy categorization. To put it simply, the only band that sounds like The Maw… Is The Maw.”
