The Second Annual Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Cook-off

February 11th, 2017 at  4 p.m.

Lefty’s will provide paper plates and plastic silverware for the attendees. Competitors must provide their own ingredients, cooking utensils and heat sources (crock pots, griddle etc). Competitors may arrive to set up and begin cooking no earlier than 2 p.m. and no later than 3:30 p.m., and you must be ready to serve when the doors open at 4 p.m. Be prepared to provide samples of your soup and sandwiches to anywhere between 50 and 100 people. If you run out, you might lose out on votes. We got overwhelmed during our first cook-off and most competitors ran out of food. Any leftover food you don’t want to take home will be taken to a local food bank.

Voting system is as follows: each competitor is assigned a number. Each attendee is given 4 voting ticket. Patrons will be judging on the following criteria:

  • Presentation
  • Soup recipe
  • Sandwich recipe
  • How well your creation represents the traditional combo of grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Attendees will drop the appropriate ticket into the bucket of the team they think won that category.  Buckets will be set up away from the cooking/serving area. First place will be awarded to the bucket with the most overall tickets in it at 7 p.m. Second place goes to whoever has the bucket with the second most tickets etc. Voting is cut off at 7 p.m. All the buckets will be counted and the winner will be announced at 7:30 p.m. Simple!

Prize money depends on how many paid attendees comes through the door. Basic break down will be: First Place wins 60 percent of the door money. Second Place wins 30 percent of the door money. Third Place wins a Lefty’s hoodie. The winner of each category wins a Lefty’s Gift Card!

Please spread the word about this event! The more people who come, the more money you can win!

Competitors must submit entry form by February 6th!

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Cook-off Rules and Regs

  1. No more than 2 people per cooking team.
  2. Cooking teams must register in advance. Registration closes on midnight 2/9/17 (Thursday morning/Wednesday night)
  3. Be prepared to feed 50-100 people. If we have leftover food, we are donating it to a local food pantry.
  4. Sandwich rules: Must be on bread. Must have cheese in it. Cheese must be the star of the sandwich. No meat allowed in sandwich. Beyond bread butter and cheese your sandwich may contain up to 3 other ingredients. So cheese doesn’t count against your ingredient number, no matter how many types of cheese you use.
  5. Soup rules: It must be a tomato based soup.
  6. Sample sizes must be big enough to offer a good representation of your creation. About 3 ounces of soup is a good starting point (that’s two shot glasses worth). And on traditionally sized bread, figure you can get 4 samples out of each sandwich. There is no set regulation on sample size, but remember the patrons eating your offering are the ones judging it, so be sure to give them a reasonable sized sample.
  7. You MUST have both soup and sandwich available.
  8. You can only do ONE kind of sandwich and ONE kind of soup per cooking team.
  9. Soup must be prepared before arrival and be stored in a crock pot or something else to be served hot.
  10. If sandwiches are prepared ahead of time, they must be grilled or otherwise heated on site.
  11. What we are saying is your soup and sandwich needs to be hot.
  12. Patrons will be judging on the following criteria:
    1. Presentation
    2. Soup recipe
    3. Sandwich recipe
    4. How well your creation represents the traditional combo of grilled cheese and tomato soup.
  13. One vote per category per patron.
  14. Entrants must provide their own cooking/serving ingredients and utensils. We will provide bowls, spoons and paper plates for the public.
  15. Power outlets available, please note how many you will need on your entry form. We advise keeping your power needs to two outlets if possible. We had some trouble with over-loaded breakers at our first event. I will try to spread the power to different breakers, so if you have an extension cord that might help.
  1. The smallest serving station is 24”x40.” There are slightly larger tables. First come first serve on which station you will get. Contestants may enter the building and set up their station no earlier than 2 p.m. on the day of the event. The event opens to the public at 4 p.m. Judging is closed at 7 p.m. and the announcement of the winner will be at 7:30
